Costa Rican dry season ends in April. Rainfall still does not occur as frequently during this month like you might fnd in May   but the country still gets more than the usual amount of moisture and precipitation. Temperatures range from 60 to almost 90 degrees Fahrenheit for lowlands while the highlands experience a 20 – 30 degree temperature drop.

Room vacancy as well as flight reservations begin to trickle around this time but will definitely pick up as the Holy Week or the Easter Season grows nearer. The Easter Holidays may prove to be a challenge to both Ticos (Costa Rican natives) and foreigners Costa Rica weather in Aprilalike. The peak of this event happens on Holy Thursday and Good Friday when even public transportation sometimes close in observance of the holiday. It is best practice to make arrangements ahead of time as well as ensure you arrive before the two days mentioned to avoid issues with transfers.

Costa Rica Weather in April for Semana Santa

During Semana Santa (local term for Holy Week) expect hotels to be full, beaches to be crowded and prices to be a bit higher than usual. An occasional traffic jam may also be a common thing as the streets will have constant religious processions. There will also be other festivities that include: concerts, carnivals, rodeos and bullfights which provide excellent photo opportunities.

April 11 also marks the celebration of a local hero, Juan Santamaria, a Tico who fought and defeated the American William Walker. Walker tried to invade their lands in the Battle of the Rivas in 1856. This day is also known to locals as National Heroes Day.

Other lesser known festivals include Fiesta San Rafael De Santa Ana and Fiesta Tarazzu which are both celebrated through revelry and merrymaking, music, dancing, traditional food and toro a la Tica. Roughly translated it means: Bullfights without bloodshed.

Weather in April Hot Tips

The Cost Rica weather  in April is the end of the dry season and the beginning of the rainy season, because of this transition time it can be hot and humid with less shade as the trees are at their barest. Cost Rica Weather Season in March & April is a good time to check out the countryside or less visited areas because the rainy season has not yet ravaged the roads and the brunt of the busy tourist season has considerably slowed down by now.

Do keep in mind that April weather in costa rica is when the Costa Rican sun is at its strongest intensity so Sunscreen, and sunglasses are a must.
