Best Places in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Central America. There are many reasons why millions of tourists flock to the country yearly. The country is gifted with natural resources. Aside from figuring highly in the Human Development Index for promoting higher human development, Costa Rica is also known for its environment-friendly initiatives. Costa Ricans are also among the happiest people in the planet. Learn more about the best of Costa Rica in this article that discusses the different points of interests in this Central American country.

A vacation in Costa Rica is the perfect getaway from cosmopolitan life. The beautiful Costa Rica attractions are complemented by the friendly Costa Ricans and the very simple, laidback lifestyle in the country. There are lots of activities to appeal to just about every tourist- from surfers, beach bums, hikers, and nature enthusiasts.

Corcovado National Park

The Corcovada National Park is considered as the premier national park in the country with its abundant wildlife. Located at the Osa Peninsula in the southern region of the country, the national park measures more than 260 square miles. There are more than 130 mammal species nestled in the national park along with 375 birds and 117 repitles and amphibians. Nature lovers will enjoy their time in the park that is nestled with numerous beach and inland hiking trails.

Rivers and creeks also dot the confines of the national park. The Claro River is a nice destination for those who love to swim, unlike the Sirena River which has rough conditions and nestled with Bull Sharks and Sting Rays.  Camping is another favorite activity in the park.

Drake Bay

For tourists who love the sea, Drake Bay is the place to go to when in Costa Rica. Drake Bay is considered one of the best of Costa Rica natural attractions. Despite being one of the most difficult-to-reach places in Costa Rica, Drake Bay still attracts a lot of tourists because of its rich marine life. It can only be accessed via boat, and lodging in the area is quite limited. However, lodges and hotels in the area offer vacation packages and pick-up services from towns such as Sierpe to tourists to make their travel more convenient.

Drake Bay is the destination for scuba divers particularly the island of Isla del Caño. The tiny island is rich in underwater beauty, with schools of tropical fishes and dolphins greeting tourists. For those who are not into scuba diving, other activities like horseback riding, canoeing, and kayaking trips are available. Hiking is also a preferred past-time by tourists in the area.

Nosara

A list of the best of Costa Rica destinations won’t be complete without the mention of Nosara.  This coastal community may be lacking in infrastructure but it is considered as a surfer’s paradise. The lack of infrastructure may be an inconvenience for some, but for most tourists, it only proves that the area has been unspoiled. The beaches are pristine and the sand powdery white, making it more attractive to many visitors.

Arenal Volcano

Arenal Volcano is an active volcano that also boasts of a perfect cone. Millions of tourists visit towns near the volcano such as La Fortuna for a view of the magnificent fireworks display emanating from the cone of the volcano. Around the Arenal Volcano national park are several lodges that have a spectacular view of the volcanoes. While the chances of seeing pyroclastic displays are 50-50, there are other adventures to be enjoyed around the area such as hiking.  There are also waterfalls around the area like the Cataratas Rio Fortuna which is near the edge of the Arenal Volcano, the Tabacon hot springs and the Balneario Tabacon which is somewhat expensive.

These are just some of the more popular tourist destinations in Costa Rica. Tourists who are planning to go on a Costa Rica adventure should consider going to these destinations to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

  1. A great preview of some of the most attractive spots in Costa Rica for visitors. There are so many, I’m sure it was hard to pick out which ones to use in this post.

I’d add the cloud forests of Monteverde and the southern Caribbean coast, especially the national park at Manzanillo, near the border with Panama, to this list of must-sees.

The great things is that Costa Rica is such a small country that it’s quite possible to visit 2, 3, even 4 of these destinations in one trip.
